Kōnae

During the Royal Commission of Inquiry into Abuse in Care survivors often experienced great difficulty getting access to the information held about them.

This project was about creating a website to help the 655,000 New Zealanders who were placed in care know how to get any files or records from the organisations involved in their care or guardianship.

This was led by the Citizen’s Advice Bureau as survivors wanted it to be independent of the NZ government.

The challenge

This was very much a collaborative project. I worked with Abuse in Care survivors closely to understand their experiences and perspectives interacting with care institutions and their record holders.

I also worked alongside IDIA, a Māori-led design agency, on the implementation of branding and illustrative assets. As part of this project I produced print collateral and video content to support the launch of the website.

Final outcomes

Within a couple of months the Kōnae website had more than 40,000 page views and more than 1000 requests for records sent through its online form.

I was proud to be part of the solution to give people the tools they need to navigate the difficult and labyrinthine network of record holders and piece together the lost records of their time in care; family, history and identity.
